Regent Park Film Festival 10th annual Under the Stars: Movies in the Park

Regent Park Film Festival free outdoor film series Under the Stars returned to Regent Park this summer, alongside family-friendly programming every Wednesday from July 5 – 19th in Regent Park. The movie screenings took place at the Big Park alongside Taste of Regent Park, a weekly community market hosted by Fred Victor Centre at 40 Oak.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Under the Stars and RPFF was excited to present 3 screenings in Regent Park and one screening in Dentonia Park located in Scarborough on July 22nd.
The 2023 lineup of movie screenings included “English Vinglish”, “Turning Red”, and “Wendell and Wild”.
Over the last 10 years, Under the Stars has become a pillar in the Regent Park community, and a space to connect new and old residents through films that prominently feature Indigenous, Black and People of Colour on screen.
RPFF remains free and accessible, as they work towards removing barriers to access in film and media arts.
The event included family-friendly games and activities before the film:
- Drum circle by Community Music Schools of Toronto, the drum circle allowed audiences with little to no experience to play hand drums and learn basic rhythms.
- Arts and Craft by ArtHeart, their team created construction paper animal masks with participants.
- The Children’s Book Bank gave away free books for children and families, along with book readings and story sharing activities.
- Artist Aniqa Al-basith provided free henna art for attendees.
- Face Painting with Dina Belaia
The event had popcorn and drinks for sale, with proceeds helping to keep their year-round programming free and accessible for everyone.
The film was screened at sundown.
