Fields of Opportunity: Showcasing Manitoba's Agricultural Contributions to Canada's Economy

In a world of innovation and vitality. Winnipeg City unveiled the event, Discover Agriculture in The City, for the public to discover the impact agriculture has on our daily lives. This free one-day event was a chance to explore the agriculture world for kids and their parents.

Discover Agriculture in The City included exhibitor booths, a food fight put on by the University of Manitoba, a photo booth, and hands-on activities.

Richard Lavergne, a volunteer for the event, explained the importance of people understanding agriculture. He says that what they are trying to do is promote and educate people in urban areas about agriculture and its importance to us in many aspects.

 He said that “there is a lot of research going on in Manitoba, specifically in regards to agriculture. It’s a big part of our economy and a big part of our culture, so it’s really important for people to understand where our culture fits in because we all have to support things that are related to agriculture.”

This annual event isn't just about awareness: it's about highlighting the significant contributions agriculture has on Manitoba’s economy, and underscoring its vital importance to all Canadians. In 2021 alone, Canada's agriculture and agri-food system generated over $134.9 billion to the nation's GDP, and employed 2.1 million people across the country with 35 thousand 260 jobs right here in Manitoba.

Lavergne added the agriculture challenges in Winnipeg are that farmers are always tied to the weather. “So, if it’s too dry or too wet, it is really important for farmers to understand the weather patterns. There are also some issues with workers, getting workers in the field in the agricultural industry.” 

Manitoba leads the way in agricultural innovation, boasting 24 agri-food research and development centres, and providing cutting-edge technology and skills to propel the entire agriculture sector forward.
