Laura Dupont Discusses Community Challenges and NDP Solutions on We’ve Got Issues

In a recent studio interview with Nancy Furness, producer and host of We’ve Got Issues, Federal NDP Candidate for Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, Laura Dupont, addressed the growing poverty and homelessness crisis in her community. She described the situation as an "absolute policy failure" in a country as wealthy as Canada.

Laura emphasized that the NDP prioritizes working families over corporate interests, highlighting the party's commitment to thoughtful and inclusive policies. She pointed out that the NDP has leveraged its position in Ottawa to advance key initiatives, including national dental care, pharmacare, daycare, and school food programs. According to her, these programs help reduce the cost of living, improve Canadians’ health, and save families money. As a strong advocate for good union jobs, fair bargaining, and robust benefits, Laura also underscored the importance of pensions, which she says the NDP is dedicated to protecting.

One of Laura’s primary goals is reducing subsidies and tax breaks for large corporations. She argues that every Canadian deserves a home and that more co-op housing and affordable rental stock should be built, rather than catering to investors.

Reflecting on past tragedies, Laura mentioned that the deaths during the heat dome were both tragic and preventable. She called for more action at all levels of government to address climate change, proposing that the $33 billion currently spent on fossil fuel subsidies be redirected toward initiatives that build climate resilience, protect biodiversity, and safeguard freshwater resources.

On reconciliation, Laura believes there is still much work to be done. She emphasized the need for inclusive governments, more actions on missing and murdered Indigenous women, preserving Indigenous languages and cultures, ensuring clean water and housing, and fully implementing the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Laura also expressed concern about the increasing polarization in society and the centralization of media, along with the growing influence of social media, which she views as threat to democracy. She stands by the NDP’s supply and confidence agreement with the Liberals, which she says is essential for advancing key priorities and levelling the playing field for Canadians.

As the next federal election approaches on October 20, 2025, Laura Dupont remains unapologetic about the NDP’s mission to fight for policies that serve working families, promote fairness, and build a more inclusive society.
