Dryden City Council Addresses Workplace Harassment Legislation Advocacy

Dryden City Council convened for their regular meeting on August 14th, 2023, addressing a range of topics from pecuniary interests to workplace harassment and community developments.

During the delegation segment, Mrs. Amanda Fellows represented the "Women of Ontario Say No" organization. She passionately advocated for the protection of basic human rights in the workplace, especially the right to be free from harassment by elected council members. She called for legislation to hold municipally elected representatives accountable for their behavior and sought the council's endorsement of AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) recommendations.

Following the delegation, council members had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments. Counselor Keating inquired about the process for addressing harassment allegations, while Counselor Price expressed gratitude for the recent announcement regarding the creation of new child care spaces in the district.

During announcements, Mayor Jack Harrison congratulated Dryden Fiber Canada on their acquisition of the local pulp mill, emphasizing the positive economic impact on the community.

The Mayor also expressed condolences for the recent wildfire tragedy in Hawaii, underlining the importance of robust emergency management and communication systems.

In a staff report, Mr. Lansdale highlighted the necessity of replacing the aging Aaron Park Gator. The recommendation to amend the 2023 budget to cover the replacement cost using reserve funds was approved after a brief council discussion to clarify the details of the Gator replacement.

Councilor Keating acknowledged the efforts of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and praised the Dairy Queen for their participation in Miracle Treat Day. Additionally, recognition was given to the Dryden Fire Department's involvement in the event.

The meeting concluded with the passage of the confirmatory bylaw and the formal adjournment.
