New Regional Hospital to be Built in Neepawa
A long-anticipated project has finally become official this week. On December 10, Premier Stefanson held a media conference in Neepawa to announce $127 million in funding for a new hospital to be built in the town. The project is expected to break ground late next year with a tentative completion date in 2025.
Alongside Stefanson for the announcement were Health and Seniors Care MInister Audrey Gordon, Greg Nesbitt, MLA for Riding Mountain, CEO of Prairie Mountain Health Brian Schoonbaert, Dr. Brian Milligan of the Neepawa physicians group, Neepawa Mayor Blake McCutcheon. The event was hosted by Eileen Clarke, MLA for Agassiz.
Stefanson says investment in the project will “support the delivery of many health services locally, improve access and wait times, and reduce the need for many patients to travel to Winnipeg for care.” Currently, patients in Neepawa and area are often required to travel to Brandon or Winnipeg for specialized care.
The new facility is expected to more than double the size of the current hospital, and increase the number of acute care inpatient beds from 35 to 60 as well as increase the variety of services available in the region.
“This hospital has been dreamed of for at least fifteen years,” says Dr. Brain Milligan, representing the Neepawa physicians group. “We have a wonderful team to work with at the hospital and we’ve also had the unwavering support of the health region for this project, and I’m very grateful for that.”
The location for the facility is still being finalized, but is expected to be revealed in the first part of 2022.
