Spread Love, Compassion, and Charity While Respecting Those Fasting During Ramadan: Community Leader

Millions of Muslims around the world celebrate Ramadan, observing a fast from March 10 to April 9 this year.

Saima Shafaq, a respected Muslim community leader in Barrie, Ontario, engaged in a deep conversation with Jaya from Simcoe Community Media, discussing the profound significance of Ramadan in Islam. In this exclusive interview, she illuminates how Ramadan is celebrated and spoke about the importance of prayer and reflection during this sacred month.

Shafaq shared personal stories that highlighted the transformative power of Ramadan in her life. She mentioned that Ramadan teaches valuable lessons such as empathy and compassion towards those suffering from hunger. Saima emphasized that charity is also a key aspect of Ramadan, promoting the act of giving up food during fasting, which is then shared with the homeless and shelters.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to practice good deeds, relinquish anger, and spread joy and happiness. Despite the physical challenges of fasting, Shafaq noted that individuals are urged to maintain a positive outlook and show compassion towards the world.

Shafaq, who regularly participates in events at the Barrie Public Library, shared how her four-year-old son inspired her to conduct storytime sessions there. She also discussed the purpose behind these engaging storytelling sessions, highlighting the positive impact they have had on the community.

Praising the Barrie Public Library for its inclusiveness, Shafaq described it as a place of happiness. She concluded by emphasizing that Ramadan is a month of self-reflection, compassion, and empathy. She called on everyone to spread love and peace, play a role in their community, create awareness, respect Muslims—especially those who are fasting—and learn about their beliefs.

Shafaq said Ramadan fosters inclusivity, promoting a life of peace and harmony.
