This week on NWO Voices, Community Host Leanne Favreau chats with with Andy Scribilo, President of the Kenora Chamber of Commerce, about economic development in the Kenora area. During the initial stages of the pandemic, businesses in Kenora faced uncertainty and closures. Working closely with government authorities, the Chamber advocated for support measures such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), wage subsidies, and rent assistance. Financial aid played a crucial role in helping businesses weather the storm.
Another topic brought to the discussion was the struggle to find workers in Kenora. Businesses in general have experienced difficulties in recruiting employees. Scribilo noted The Chamber has initiated discussions with federal authorities to explore solutions for labor shortages, including streamlining the application process for foreign workers.
Tourism is crucial to the region, and instilling visitor confidence while maintaining safety protocols remains a priority. The Chamber maintains open lines of communication with tourists, addressing their concerns and questions. Collaboration with the city and various agencies is ongoing to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors while supporting local businesses.
