One Health Clinic Offering Medical Consultations and Immunizations for Humans and Pets in Winnipeg

March 24, 2024, marked a significant day for the communities in Winnipeg as the Spence Neighbourhood Association hosted the One Health Clinic—an event aimed at providing essential health services for both people and pets, in collaboration with Community Veterinary Outreach.

This free health drop-in clinic was a beacon of support for residents in need, offering medical consultations, immunizations, and more. From addressing human health concerns to providing care for beloved pets, the clinic aimed to ensure the well-being of all members of the community.

Maura Fournier, Community Outreach Worker at Spence Neighborhood association, explained the importance of One Health Clinic for families and their pets in Winnipeg. She says that the reason people need this kind of care is that they stay healthy, and their pets stay healthy too. She said that they provide “primarily human health services, but the incentive to human health is also through pet health. We’ve noticed that it’s definitely a hand-in-hand relationship, and people in Winnipeg are in need of this kind of service, so it’s nice to be able to provide human vaccines and pet vaccines in the same place, and we’re happy to provide them.”

The goal of the One Health Clinic was twofold: to promote a healthy and harmonious life for pets in homes and to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership. Through education and access to resources, the clinic sought to protect animals and their owners from diseases and prevent the transmission of illnesses between humans and pets.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the best practices for raising pets, particularly dogs and cats, and to receive guidance on providing nutritious food and essential care for their furry companions.

Through initiatives like the One Health Clinic, the Spence Neighbourhood Association continues to demonstrate its commitment to the well-being of the community, both human and animal alike. March 24, 2024, will be remembered as a day when health and harmony came together to uplift and empower the communities of Winnipeg.
